OCTOBER - NOVEMBER 2023 BRAINWIRE
WELCOME: GLOBAL BBP BRAINTRUST
A Message from Dr. Andrea Pfeifer, Chair of the Global BBP BrainTrust

If I look back 10 to 12 years, there has been a dramatic shift in the Alzheimer’s landscape from despair to hope with a new paradigm toward prevention. Progress has been steady and meaningful.  Industry, governments,  academia, and policy makers are now striving to provide solutions and are increasingly aware of the specific importance of women’s brain and mental health. Our job is clearly to catalyze all these efforts and add value to what needs to be achieved.

I am pleased to say that quite a lot of exciting things are happening at the moment:
  • The recent scientific advancements with Leqembi lecanemab and donanemab bring promising relief for early-stage patients and their families and showcase clinical efficacy by targeting Amyloid-Beta at the earliest stages of the disease.
  • The highly acclaimed October meeting of Lausanne X which provided a think tank and international policy focus for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases and outlined the future direction of global efforts.
  • The exciting approach on vaccine development should provide a preventative option against Alzheimer’s with a major societal impact.
  • This month’s announcement of the first US White House Initiative on Women's Health Research led by First Lady Jill Biden that  recognizes the longstanding gaps in studying and understanding women's health, including conditions like Alzheimer's disease.
In light of these developments, our call to action remains steadfast. Industry leaders, researchers, drug developers, and engaged citizens alike must seize this opportunity to contribute to the paradigm shift. By raising awareness and advocating for the prioritization of women's brain and mental health, we can collectively pioneer the next generation of discoveries.

Let us unite in support of this groundbreaking initiative and work together to ensure that women's brain health takes centre stage in the ongoing pursuit of a healthier, more equitable future.
